KOL, KOC, influencer, celebrity, seeder. Brands use these words interchangeably, but they're not the same thing, and mixing them up is one of the most common reasons a campaign underdelivers.

Here's what each one means, what they cost in Malaysia, and how to choose.

The quick definitions

Celebrity. Famous for something other than social media: acting, music, sport, pageants. A celebrity brings instant recognition and credibility, at a premium price.

KOL (key opinion leader). A creator people follow for their expertise or taste in a topic, such as beauty, food, tech or parenting. KOLs usually have a sizeable following, from tens of thousands upwards, and their recommendations carry weight.

KOC (key opinion consumer). An everyday user who shares honest experiences with a smaller audience, typically 1,000 to 10,000 followers. KOCs feel like a friend's recommendation rather than an advert. The term is especially common on Xiaohongshu and TikTok.

Seeder. A creator who receives your product and shares it in their own words, usually for little or no fee. Seeders are a type of KOC focused on genuine trial.

When to use each, with real results

Celebrity: when trust in the brand is the job

For a feminine-care brand, a well-known actress and host anchored a year-long programme. Her posts reached 454,924 people with 15,589 engagements. In a category people rarely talk about out loud, a familiar, trusted face gave every other creator in the programme something to build on. See the full programme.

KOLs: when you need reach, fast

In the same programme, 16 creators in the sustenance phase delivered 2.58 million views, with one creator of 515,000 followers among the top performers. KOLs are how you get in front of a lot of people quickly.

KOCs: when you want reach at the lowest cost

For a skincare launch, 61 nano creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers generated 913,813 views, at an estimated RM0.02 per view against an industry average of about RM0.15. The top post came from a creator with fewer than 7,000 followers and reached 207,000 views.

That's the KOC bet: on TikTok, the For You Page decides reach, not follower count. Book many small creators and expect a few to break out.

Seeders: when engagement and trust matter most

In the feminine-care programme, 30 seeders who received product but no fee produced 30,050 engagements, nearly half of the programme's total, at an engagement rate of about 33%. On Xiaohongshu, Cooltopia's 20 seeders reached an 18% engagement rate, about 4.5 times the typical benchmark.

The best campaigns mix them

You rarely need to pick just one. A strong programme often looks like a pyramid:

  • One celebrity or big KOL at the top for recognition
  • A handful of KOLs in the middle for reach
  • Many KOCs and seeders at the base for trust, reviews and search

The mix depends on your goal. Launching something new? Lean on KOLs for reach. Selling something people research before buying? Lean on KOCs and seeders for honest reviews. In a sensitive or premium category? A trusted celebrity can be worth the price.

How to decide in three questions

  1. What's the goal? Awareness points to KOLs and celebrities; trust and conversion point to KOCs and seeders.
  2. What's the budget? With RM10,000 a month, you can run many KOCs or a few KOLs, not a celebrity programme.
  3. What does your buyer do before purchasing? If they read reviews and search, you need lots of authentic voices, not one famous one.
