In early 2027, Malaysia gets something special. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected around 10 March. Two of the biggest celebrations in the country, back to back, in one long festive season.
For Malaysians, it's a wonderful time: open houses and reunion dinners, angpow and duit raya, balik kampung and coming home. Malaysians even have a name for it: Gong Xi Raya, or in the same spirit, Kongsi Raya, celebrating together.
For advertisers, it's the most exciting season of the year, with one catch. Two festivals usually mean two budgets. This time, many brands will have one budget stretched across both. Less money per festival, more competition for attention, and two audiences to speak to at once.
So how do you make one budget work twice as hard?
First, what to watch out for
1. The budget squeeze If CNY and Raya normally get separate budgets, expect pressure to combine them. Plan the season as one campaign with phases, not two campaigns fighting over one pot.
2. The creator crunch Every brand will want festive creators in the same weeks. Chinese-speaking creators for CNY, Malay-speaking creators for Ramadan and Raya, and bilingual creators for both will all be booked early. If you're not briefing creators by early December, you'll be choosing from whoever is left.
3. Crowded feeds More brands posting and boosting at the same time means generic festive content disappears. You need a sharper story, not just more red and green.
4. A mood switch in 48 hours CNY is loud and celebratory; Ramadan is reflective and generous. Your content has to switch tone almost overnight, and stay respectful while it does.
5. Two different peaks CNY peaks fast, in the two weeks before 6 February. Raya builds slowly, with its big shopping peak in the last ten days of Ramadan (late February to early March). Don't spend everything in January.
6. Sensitivities Time food and drink content for Muslim audiences around iftar, not mid-day. Keep alcohol and non-halal food out of content and ad targeting that reaches Muslim audiences. And avoid lazy mash-ups: a lion dance wearing a songkok isn't unity, it's a costume.
7. Logistics Courier cut-offs before CNY, shop closures, stock running out before Raya, and staff on leave all hit at once. Make sure your offer can actually be delivered.
How to Gong Xi Raya: two ideas that work for both festivals
The trick is to stop thinking "CNY campaign" and "Raya campaign", and look for what both celebrations share. There are two big ones.
Idea 1: Same sentiment. It's all about family.
Strip away the colours and the food, and both festivals tell the same story: coming home to the people you love.
- Coming home: 回家过年 and balik kampung are the same journey, the drive home, the traffic jams and the moment you walk through the door.
- The table: the reunion dinner and buka puasa together are both about everyone sitting down at the same table.
- The elders: angpow and duit raya, respect for parents and grandparents, and the kids running around.
- A fresh start: a new year for one, and maaf zahir dan batin (asking forgiveness) for the other.
How to use it: build one campaign idea around family and coming home, then tell it twice, once in CNY colours and once in Raya colours, with creators from each community. Add a "bridge" piece in the middle (Chap Goh Mei and the first weeks of Ramadan) that shows Malaysians celebrating together: friends visiting each other's homes, mandarin oranges at a Raya open house, kuih raya shared with Chinese neighbours. That's the content people share.
Idea 2: Same spending. Everyone upgrades before the festive season.
Whether it's CNY or Raya, Malaysians spend on the same things to get ready:
- The home: new sofa, fresh paint, new curtains, a bigger TV for the family, kitchen appliances for all that cooking
- The car: a new car, or servicing the old one before the long drive home
- New clothes: new CNY outfits and baju raya
- Gifts and food: hampers, cookies, kuih, festive snacks and groceries
- Money: angpow and duit raya packets, e-wallet top-ups, festive savings and spending
- Looking good: haircuts, skincare and grooming before the visits start
- Travel: balik kampung trips, holidays and hotel stays
How to use it: run one hero offer for the whole season, valid from January to Raya, so the same promotion, landing page and stock serve both festivals. Only the creative changes: "Get your home CNY-ready" in January, "Get your home Raya-ready" in February. One offer, two moments, half the setup cost.
Your industry playbook
Every industry feels the overlap differently, and each one has a different deadline. Here's how we'd approach the biggest ones.
Travel: start now
Two festive exoduses within about five weeks means balik kampung bus tickets, flights and hotel rooms will sell out early, and many families will have to choose which festival to travel for.
- Start promotions now (October to November). Early-bird fares and packages capture families while they're still deciding.
- Sell both trips in one go: "book your CNY and Raya trips together" bundles, or flexible fares families can switch between the two.
- Two stories, one product: the drive home for reunion dinner in February, and balik kampung for Raya in March.
- Don't forget the people who stay: city staycations, family hotel packages and Syawal holidays after Raya.
- Creators: family and travel creators sharing real "getting home" stories, plus deal-led content as the dates approach.
Cars: work backwards from the delivery date
Everyone wants to drive home in their new car. The question isn't when people want to buy; it's when the car needs to arrive.
- Plan backwards from 6 February and 10 March. Delivery times vary by model, from weeks to months, so check yours and set a clear "order by" date for each festival.
- Run the push in November and December, riding year-end sales, with messaging like "Order by [date] to drive home for CNY" and a second deadline for Raya.
- Showroom live streams keep buyers engaged while they decide, and turn interest into test drives. One car brand we work with grew from 4 to 58 leads per session over five weekly lives. See how.
- Not buying new? January is the moment for servicing, tyres and "ready for the long drive" campaigns, which suit both festivals.
FMCG: go all out
For food, drinks, snacks and household brands, this is the biggest selling season of the year, twice over. It's worth going all out.
- Dual packaging. Limited-edition packs with a CNY design on one side and a Raya design on the other, or two designs on shelf at the same time. One production run, two festivals.
- A shared design, done respectfully. A "Gong Xi Raya" edition that celebrates both cultures can be memorable, if it uses shared cultural symbols like family, home, food, florals and lanterns, rather than religious ones. Get feedback from people in both communities before printing.
- Lock packaging early. Production and distribution take time, so designs should be final by October or November to be in stores by mid-January.
- Hampers and bundles for both visiting seasons, with halal certification clearly shown.
- Creators show the packs in real festive moments. A heritage beverage brand we worked with reached 1.1 million views on Xiaohongshu with 32 small creators by doing exactly that with its limited-edition CNY packaging.
Jewellery: a range that commemorates the shared celebration
Gold and jewellery are gifted and bought for both CNY and Raya. A shared season is a rare story to tell.
- A limited "Gong Xi Raya 2027" collection that marks the year both celebrations came together. Think motifs drawn from both cultures, such as florals, songket-inspired patterns and the Year of the Goat, kept cultural rather than religious.
- Make it a keepsake: limited numbers, a certificate or engraving, packaging that tells the story. People buy commemorative pieces to remember a year.
- Launch in early January and keep it running through Raya, so the same collection carries both festivals.
- Gifting angles: for parents and grandparents, for the first festive season as a married couple, and for families who celebrate together.
- Creators: lifestyle and family creators wearing the pieces at reunion dinners and open houses, plus live selling for limited drops.
Other industries to plan for
- Home and furniture: people want the new sofa or kitchen in place before guests arrive. Set delivery cut-off dates and push in November and December.
- Electronics and appliances: bigger TVs for family gatherings, and kitchen appliances for festive cooking. Run one hero offer from January to Raya.
- Fashion: one collection, two colourways. Launch the CNY drop in early January and the baju raya drop by early February.
- Beauty and grooming: gift sets for both visiting seasons, and "look your best for the visits" content.
- Restaurants and F&B: reunion dinner bookings and buka puasa buffets come days apart, so plan both menus and both campaigns at once. See restaurant marketing in Malaysia.
- Banks and e-wallets: angpow and duit raya, digital packets, and festive spending offers, one season-long campaign with two creative versions.
When to start, by industry
| Industry | Start promoting | Key deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | Now (October to November) | Seats and rooms sell out early for both festivals |
| Cars | November to December | "Order by" dates that allow delivery before 6 February and 10 March |
| Home and furniture | November to December | Delivery before the guests arrive |
| FMCG | Packaging locked by October to November; in store mid-January | Stock on shelf before the CNY rush |
| Jewellery | Early January | Collection runs through to Raya |
| Fashion | Early January (CNY), early February (Raya) | Outfits delivered before each festival |
| Electronics and appliances | Early January | One offer running to Raya |
| Restaurants and F&B | December | Reunion dinner and buka puasa bookings open |
Making one budget go further
One core idea, two creative versions. Shoot both the CNY and Raya versions in one production day, with the same concept and different styling. You pay for one production, not two.
Lean on smaller creators. In our data from 41,000+ creator profiles, nano creators engage about 3.6 times more than mega creators on Instagram, and more than twice as much on TikTok, and cost a fraction as much. A wide line-up of nano and micro creators across both communities stretches a smaller budget a long way.
Boost only the winners. Watch the first few days of each phase and put paid boosting behind the posts that take off, instead of boosting everything.
Invite your customers in. A "My Gong Xi Raya" content challenge, where people share how their family celebrates, gives you real stories from both communities and content you can reuse in ads.
Let affiliates and live selling do the selling. Festive bundles on TikTok Shop and Shopee, promoted by commission-based creators and live sessions, pay out only when you sell.
A simple way to phase the season
| Phase | When (2027) | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1. CNY burst | Mid-January to 6 February | Family reunion story in CNY colours; hero offer launches; Xiaohongshu and TikTok |
| 2. Bridge | 7 to about 20 February | Celebrating together: Chap Goh Mei, early Ramadan, giving back; lighter spend |
| 3. Raya push | About 21 February to 10 March | Family story in Raya colours; the same hero offer; Raya shopping peak |
| 4. Syawal | March | Open houses and thank-yous; report and learn |
How you split the budget depends on who your buyers are. A brand whose customers are mostly Chinese-speaking will weight phase 1; a brand whose customers are mostly Malay will weight phase 3. Most brands selling to everyone will keep the bridge phase light and spend most of the budget on the two peaks.

The bottom line
The 2027 festive season will test every brand's budget. But the brands that win won't be the ones that spend the most. They'll be the ones that find the story both celebrations share, family, and the moment both celebrations trigger, spending to get ready, and tell it well, twice.
Gong Xi Raya, everyone.
